Contractor Background Checks
Applicants for a contractor’s license can complete a criminal background check online at Licensing Background Checks.
A.R.S. § 32-1122(H) authorizes the Registrar of Contractors (ROC) to check criminal records before issuing or renewing a license. Since 2002, the ROC has performed background checks by obtaining fingerprints and sending them to the Department of Public Safety (DPS), who then sends them to the FBI. These background checks cost $22 and take roughly 6-8 weeks before the ROC receives the criminal background information.
Obviously, this additional 6-8 weeks is a very long time for applicants waiting to get a license. To balance this burden on applicants while better fulfilling its statutory obligations of conducting criminal background checks, the agency has found a private vendor who will perform criminal background checks in less time and for less money. After completing this criminal background check online, the results will automatically be provided to the ROC.
Depending on the results of this background check, the ROC may also require that applicants complete a criminal history disclosure packet for the 6-8 week FBI background check.
